Planting Starts at Home

Like the weather, we are warming up to the growing season.  Our new website is up and we will keep updating as the season progresses.  The rotations are planned and field preparations are underway, and there is a lot to prep this year.  Even before any of that seeding is already underway.  Not in the fields of course, but in small blocks of soil.  The rice is getting a head start on the growing season in soil blocks.  In a month or so we will move it out doors.  Rice in Sundre, sounds crazy, but these are high altitude varieties, and with some experimentation we and careful seed saving we hope to develop the necessary techniques and genetics to make a viable crop.  This may take a few seasons, but once we have a reliable rice and good understanding on how to get a reliable yield we look forward to not only offering the harvest to local consumers, but also offering the seed to other growers who live in zones not normally associated with rice growing.

The farmers at Little Loaves Farm have been growing for close to a decade in and around Calgary.  They focus on growing good soil, confident that with healthy vibrant soil the crops will take of themselves.
